Belting a Tune

A great sadness of my life is that my love for singing is not matched by my actual singing talent. I will never forget singing at the top of my lungs to Florence and the Machine's "Ship to Wreck" in the car only to have toddler Margaret call out, "Mommy no sing!"

However, last year she wrote this on a Mother's Day questionnaire, so I must have redeemed myself:

To use her wording, I do in fact love a song with a weird vocal solo. They're so much fun to belt out in the car with no one there to judge you.

Lately there have been some decidedly undelightful things going on at my school, and yesterday I found myself being really grumpy about it. On the drive home, I reminded myself that my happiness is in my own hands: I can choose to dwell on the bad, or I can turn on some music and sing a weird vocal solo at the top of my lungs and get over it. I decided to choose the latter. It was delightful!

In case you need to do the same, here are some of my favorite songs with weird vocal solos for you to enjoy:

"Wordless Chorus" My Morning Jacket

"Alaska" Maggie Rogers

"Daydreaming" Harry Styles

"Orange Blood" Mt. Joy
